What is Highland Dance?
Highland dance is one of the oldest forms of dance, tracing its roots back to Scotland in the 11th century. This form of dance was done in times of joy and of war, often over swords and shields. Highland dancing derived from solo step dancing but is unique in the way that the dancer dances on the balls of the feet and is required to integrate upper body, arm and hand movements. It is a highly technical, athletic form of dance that combines traditional Scottish steps with the grace of ballet. Historically Highland dance was done only by men but it is now a predominantly female sport.

Traditional Scottish Dances
- Highland Fling- The Fling is said to have originated as a victory dance centuries ago. Danced on a targ or shield with a tall spike protruding through the center, the dancer must perform the steps “on the spot”. In competition the dancer dances this dance in one spot, but not on a shield or targ. The hand and arm movements are grouped in such a way as to mimic the antlers of a stag on a hillside. Usually taught first, this dance contains many of the basic movements of Highland Dance.

- Sword Dance- This dance originated in 1054 when it was done prior to a battle. The thought was that if the dancer touched the sword it would be a bad omen for the upcoming battle. In competition if the sword is touched the dancer is disqualified and receives no points for the dance.
- Seann Truibhas- This dance it pronounced “shawn trews” and literally means “old trousers". Like the other traditional highland dances, the trews also tells a historic Scottish story. The trews tells the story of the English forbidding the Scots to wear their beloved kilts, forcing them to wear trousers. If you watch this dance carefully you can notice all the shakes and brushes the dancer does, signifying the Scots “shaking off” their trousers so that they can once again wear their kilts.

- Reel
- There are a few different forms of the reel, but all are danced with 4 dancers that weave in and out of a pattern throughout the dance. While the dance is done with 4 dancers, the dancers are judged individually. This dance was thought to have been choreographed by a group of chilly church-goers trying to keep warm while waiting for the minister to arrive.
